ICH SIGFRIED UIBERREITHER LANDESHAUPTMANNArt in the Public SpaceGraz, Burgtor on December 9th, 2008 at 11 am In the intrados of the Burgtor gate in Graz Sigfried Uiberreither (1908—1984), Provincial Governor and Reichsstatthalter of Styria, asks questions. Questions that Jochen Gerz has him ask passers-by and visitors to the city at what is today and was then the seat of the Provincial Governor. Questions of a National Socialist perpetrator concerning the complicity and silence of the others, the majority, not only then, at the time of the crimes, but afterwards. He says: Without you I would not have become Sigfried Uiberreither. This project, that came about on the unanimous initiative of the Styrian Parliament and by government resolution, is exemplary for Styria and beyond. It is the first part in a series of public works by Gerz on the subject of repression. With the aid of the Styrian public and its authorship he will be creating a work at many locations around Styria as of 2009. 63 Jahre danach (63 years after) not only challenges the “memory” of National Socialism — the time of contemporary witnesses is coming to an end — but also presents a culture that gives real public meaning to the action and experience of every individual. Invitation to the opening: 09|12|2008, 11.00 am - Venue: Graz, Burgtor Speakers: Institut für Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Steiermark
